Functional Geometric Design

Functional geometric design applies to a wide array of transportation systems, including neighborhood streets, parking areas, pedestrian and bicycle facilities, and complex arterial intersections and major freeway interchanges. With vast knowledge of traffic engineering and roadway design principles, KAI develops geometric solutions that are constructible and achieve the desired operational and safety performance objectives, while considering multimodal access, regional system, and corridor system needs. KAI has also developed design guidance for FHWA and NCHRP (including Reports 613, 687, 707, and 672) on high-speed intersections, closely spaced ramps and interchanges, channelized right-turn lanes, auxiliary through lanes, roundabouts, diverging diamond interchanges, and alternative intersections.
