Traffic Signal Design
KAI is a national leader in the planning, design, and operations of traffic signals. KAI has extensive experience working on signal design projects that involve creative solutions in complex urban environments. KAI led the multiyear research project that evaluated various left-turn signalized treatments and concluded with the development of the flashing yellow left-turn arrow as an acceptable signal indication (NCHRP Report 493, Evaluation of Traffic Signal Displays for Protected/Permissive Left-Turn Control). KAI staff also authored various industry-leading, national guidebooks, including the Traffic Signal Timing Manual. KAI uses the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) as a guide in designing traffic signals and is actively engaged with ongoing efforts to modify the manual.
