Black Cat/Franklin Road Analysis & Design
The Franklin Road/Black Cat Road Project is an ongoing, federally-aid project with ITD and ACHD, involving the widening of Franklin Road from a two-lane to five-lane section from Ten Mile Road to Black Cat Road, and widening of the Franklin Road/Black Cat Road intersection to include the installation of a traffic signal in order to ultimately build conditions.
KAI has provided intersection alternatives analysis, as well as signing and striping design, for the intersection and approaches. The analysis involved exploration of signal and multilane roundabout alternatives from both an operational perspective and a right-of-way impacts perspective. KAI’s evaluation determined the traffic signal to be the appropriate treatment given the inability of the multilane roundabout to process the forecast future demand. KAI’s evaluation also determined shifting of the intersection slightly to the south would avoid costly impacts to the large power poles and substation to the north of Franklin Road.
