Interstate 80 Ramp Metering Feasibility Study
KAI conducted a ramp metering feasibility study of the 45-mile long Solano I-80 freeway corridor, a major inter-regional corridor with significant weekend and holiday congestion. KAI worked with MTC, Caltrans, and a committee of local technical representatives (the Solano Highways Partnership - SoHIP) to identify when, where, and how ramp metering can be implemented to improve both freeway and surface street operations. The analysis included data collection, forecasting future traffic demands using the Solano Transportation Authority (STA) travel demand model, operations analyses using the FREQ freeway optimization model, and extensive diversion analysis using CUBE Avenue dynamic traffic assignment model. The project also included holding meetings with local agencies to discuss how potential effects of ramp meters on local streets.
