NCHRP Project 03-98: Guidelines on the Use of Auxiliary Through Lanes at Signalized Intersections

KAI was the prime contractor for this project, which produced guidelines for the operational analysis, safety analysis, and design of auxiliary through lanes (ATLs) at signalized intersections. The work for this project included a literature review, survey of highway agencies across the United States, field data collection, and development of operational models. The operational models will predict the lane utilization of auxiliary through lanes based on prevailing traffic and geometric conditions. Guidance was developed for applying microsimulation models to analyze ATLs. The project also produced recommendations for incorporating findings within standard reference manuals such as the Highway Capacity Manual, Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, the AASHTO Greenbook, and the Highway Safety Manual.
