Training on Pedestrian Safety at Unsignalized Crossings
Through an on-call contract with District IV of the Florida Department of Transportation, KAI developed and taught a 4-hour seminar on pedestrian safety at unsignalized crossings. The training was delivered to District engineers and planners. The course provided detailed information on the wide range of pedestrian crossing treatments currently available, presented research on effectiveness and safety of each treatment, and summarized evaluation tools available to practitioners for selecting treatments. The course material was supplemented with detailed case studies showing real-world applications of the various design treatments and evaluation tools. Design treatments covered in the course included pedestrian hybrid beacons, rapid flash beacons, raised median islands, pavement markings, and signs.
