University of Maryland, Baltimore Master Plan Update

KAI, as a subconsultant to Ayers Saint Gross, prepared an update to the transportation element of the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) Master Plan. The transportation element identified improvements to the street network through the UMB campus, located west of downtown Baltimore. The plan focued on recommendations to improve pedestrian safety, create gateway entries, and improve wayfinding for visitors. KAI's work included a traffic operations analysis of roadway improvement concepts (such as converting one-way streets to two-way), and proposing pedestrian curb extensions at intersections, reducing the number of travel lanes and allowing 24-hour curbside parking. KAI also evaluated MTA and local transit service, provided guidelines for locating bus stops on campus, and identified other treatments and connections to improve the campus walkability. As a follow-up activity, KAI assisted the University of Maryland Medical Center by preparing traffic signal modification plans and a parking management plan, for temporary and ultimate conditions, as part of their expansion of the Shock Trauma Center, located on campus.
