US 101/Del Rio Road Interchange
KAI provided traffic operations and conceptual design services to objectively conduct intersection control evaluations for the ramp terminal intersections at the US 101/Del Rio Road interchange, along with the closely spaced Del Rio Road/El Camino Real intersection, in Atascadero, California. KAI led the Caltrans Intersection Control Evaluation (ICE) activities, and developed conceptual layouts that supported the preliminary analysis and environmental document efforts to define interchange improvements.
The project was initiated by the City of Atascadero, California to help mitigate the impacts of a proposed Walmart located in the southwest quadrant of the existing Del Rio Road/El Camino Real intersection. Roundabouts were considered in an attempt to preserve the existing bridge structure, which would not be able to accommodate vehicle storage under signal control alternatives. All concept designs incorporate pedestrian and bicycle features, and preserve the existing development to the east of the interchange. The KAI analysis included design year traffic operational analysis, a safety assessment, and life-cycle cost considerations.
