Senior Principal Engineer Hermanus Steyn presented “Roadways, Urban Streets and Right-of-Way Considerations – The Details: Impacts of Connected Vehicles on Multimodal Geometric Design” as part of the panel discussion Brave New World – How Autonomous Vehicles Will Shape Our Built Environment at the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) Annual Meeting and EXPO, which took place October 20-23, 2017, in Los Angeles.

About the panel discussion:
Autonomous vehicles are coming. Will they bring utopia or a nightmare of zombie cars? How will they reshape our communities and roadside environments? Can we create policies to build Smart Cities and design our roadways to manage this new technology while providing active transportation and attractive streetscapes?

Hermanus provided a brief overview of how modern roadway geometric design evolved from railroads, explained how automobile roadways have been designed for humans, and shared a quick overview of FHWA Controlling Criteria and recent changes.

Moderated by Wendy Miller, FASLA, the panel also included Adrian Pearmine, National Director for Smart Cities and Connected Vehicles, DKS Associates; and Gerry Tierney, LEED AP, Associate Principal at Perkins + Will.
