Challenge

The Fairbanks Metropolitan Area Transportation System (FMATS) is updating their Metropolitan Transportation Plan (MTP) to plan for growth and land use changes, and to lay out a long-range vision for the transportation system in the Fairbanks metropolitan area. Because the Fairbanks area is in an air quality non-attainment area, federal regulations also require that the MTP be updated every four years.

Solution

Kittelson is working with FMATS, Alaska DOT&PF, and the Fairbanks North Star Borough to determine existing and future safety, vehicle, freight, transit, pedestrian, and bicycle needs; establish multimodal transportation priorities; and develop a fiscally-constrained long-term multimodal plan that coordinates agency plans, prioritizes projects, establishes planning targets, and is adopted by the governing body.
