In this role, you will collaborate with transportation professionals, planners, engineers, and other team members to develop maps, graphics, and visual materials that help communicate technical information to clients, community members, and project stakeholders. You will gain hands-on experience applying graphic design principles to real-world transportation and community-planning projects.
What You’ll Do
- Design clear, visually engaging maps for reports, presentations, public meetings, and other project materials.
- Transform geographic, transportation, and demographic information into graphics that are understandable to both technical and nontechnical audiences.
- Use Adobe Creative Cloud and mapping software to create and refine maps, diagrams, infographics, and supporting visual materials.
- Apply principles of visual hierarchy, typography, color, accessibility, and information design.
- Collaborate with project teams to understand the purpose, audience, and key message of each visual.
- Edit and format graphics to align with client requirements and established brand standards.
- Review work carefully for accuracy, consistency, and readability.
- Participate in project discussions and incorporate feedback from team members.
- Assist with other graphic design and visual-communication needs as opportunities arise.
What We’re Looking For
- Current enrollment in a graphic design, visual communication, cartography, geography, geographic information systems, urban planning, or related degree program.
- Demonstrated interest or experience in mapmaking, cartographic design, or geographic visualization.
- Experience with Adobe Illustrator; familiarity with InDesign and Photoshop is preferred.
- Familiarity with ArcGIS, QGIS, or another mapping platform is preferred.
- Understanding of foundational design principles, including layout, typography, color, and visual hierarchy.
- Ability to translate detailed or technical information into clear, audience-friendly visuals.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate work.
- Effective communication, collaboration, organization, and time-management skills.
- Curiosity and willingness to learn about transportation, planning, and the communities our work serves.
Portfolio Requirement
Applicants should submit a portfolio or work samples demonstrating graphic design capabilities. Examples involving maps, data visualization, infographics, environmental graphics, or other information-design projects are strongly encouraged. Academic and personal projects are welcome.
Internship Experience
As a Kittelson intern, you will have opportunities to contribute to meaningful project work, learn from professionals across disciplines, and develop a stronger understanding of how visual communication supports transportation planning and engineering.
