Incorporating context-based design into transportation projects requires more than planning—it demands practical tools and training to ensure successful implementation.
Our Role
Through the NCHRP 1022 project, we partnered with Kansas, Nevada, and Maine DOTs to:
- Develop comprehensive training materials for context classification.
- Host two- to three-day workshops to test materials and gather feedback.
- Refine resources into a national set of tools that agencies can adopt.
Why It Matters
These materials empower agency champions to:
- Train colleagues effectively.
- Bring staff up to speed on context-sensitive design principles.
- Ensure these principles are applied in real projects, supporting transportation solutions that reflect local community needs.
Impact
By bridging the gap between planning and practice, this initiative helps agencies move from concept to implementation, creating streets and transportation systems that are safer, more adaptable, and more responsive to context.
