Welcome to Roundabouts Week, a time to recognize how communities are using this intersection design to improve safety and mobility. Roundabouts can take many forms, and each one reflects the needs of the people moving through them. To celebrate, we’ve gathered recent projects, research, and stories that show the range of ways roundabouts are being applied. Together they illustrate how a familiar intersection type continues to evolve and make a difference in our communities.

The Roundabouts Database

How many known roundabouts are in the state of Washington? Where has Florida implemented multilane roundabouts with rectangular rapid flashing beacons at their pedestrian crossings? What are some examples of roundabouts built near railroad crossings?

These questions can all be answered using the Roundabouts Database, the most comprehensive inventory of roundabouts and circular intersections on the web.

The Secret Ingredient to Better Roundabouts

For public agencies tasked with delivering safe, efficient, and publicly supported transportation solutions, the stakes are high—particularly when it comes to roundabouts, an intersection form that tends to elicit strong opinions from the public.

Spending the time and effort to solicit a roundabout peer review from an experienced designer can be tremendously beneficial for catching issues before they become costly problems.

How Artwork and a Roundabout are Improving Safety at This Intersection

What do roundabouts and art have in common? Both strengthen safety on our roads, and both are featured at the 10th and Barry intersection in DC. This project began as a poem by artist Mazaré, who urged the city to do more to protect people walking and biking.

The intersection now includes a roundabout, which—like the artwork—slows speeds and creates a safer environment. Studies show that art in intersections reduces speeding, improves safety, and is fully MUTCD-compliant.

Low-Budget, High-Quality Roundabout Options for Your Project

Mini and modular roundabouts are punk. That’s right, if you’re looking to be unconventional in the transportation world, you might want to consider mini and modular roundabouts for your project. These types of roundabouts are great options for agencies that are trying to find a lower-cost, lower-traffic-impact version of roundabouts.

And just like punk, they challenge the norm and prove that small changes can make a big difference. Get into the nitty gritty with NCHRP Domestic Scan 23-01.

Improving Safety, Mobility, and Livability Along a Key Alameda Connection

Big changes are coming to Alameda’s Clement/Tilden corridor, where Kittelson partnered with the City of Alameda to transform a high-injury intersection into a safer, more welcoming place for everyone.

The redesign includes a new roundabout to calm traffic and improve safety; separated bike and pedestrian paths; safer crossings and upgraded transit stops; and a new dog park and community space.

A Roundabouts Bundle? Sounds Like a Transportation Professional’s Dream

As part of a design–build partnership with the Virginia Department of Transportation, our team helped deliver four modern roundabouts and one continuous green-T intersection.

This bundle of projects reimagines some of Albemarle county’s most challenging intersections to reduce conflict points and crashes, strengthen traffic flow, and keep things cost effective.
