For more than a decade, we have partnered with the Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) to update critical resources that guide roadway design and safety practices. Our past work includes revisions to the Road Design Manual, Safety Engineering Manual, Non-Destructive Testing Manual, and Pavement Design Manual.

Current Initiative

We are now collaborating with MDT on a major effort to develop 12 new manuals focused on Traffic Engineering, Traffic Design, and Traffic Operations.

Phase I included:

  • Work sessions with MDT to identify manual needs.
  • Development of white papers.
  • Creation of annotated outlines for all 12 manuals.

Phase II is underway and includes drafting:

  • Traffic Engineering Manual (an overarching introduction).
  • Five Traffic Design Manuals.
  • Six Traffic Operations Manuals.

Why It Matters

These manuals will provide MDT with a comprehensive, consistent framework for traffic engineering and operations, ensuring safer, more efficient transportation systems across Montana.
