“It’s rewarding to be part of a process that blends strategy, storytelling, and collaboration.”
We’re an interconnected nationwide team, but we each have our own reasons for being passionate about the work we do. This month, get to know Randall Chesson, senior marketing coordinator in our Raleigh office.
What’s your background and how did you end up at Kittelson?
I began my career with a foundation in graphic design and sculpture, earning my double bachelor’s degree in college. My first job out of college was in trade show booth design and fabrication, which introduced me to the world of marketing through close collaboration with clients. That exposure inspired a career shift toward marketing, eventually leading to a marketing coordinator position at a general contractor specializing in heavy civil infrastructure. This role gave me my first experience in the AEC industry, working alongside civil engineering subconsultants. That connection ultimately led me to join Kittelson, where I’ve continued to grow within the industry.
Outside of work, I’m deeply involved in my church community, where I serve on the Men’s Forged Ministry team, act as a Stephen Minister providing one-on-one care and support, and participate in humanitarian relief missions. These experiences have helped me grow in empathy, leadership, and service. In my free time, I enjoy working on my wood lathe in the garage, where I handcraft one-of-a-kind pens and bowls, it’s a creative outlet that keeps me grounded and inspired.

What do you find most rewarding about your work?
As a marketing coordinator, I find a lot of fulfillment in the variety and creativity the role offers. I enjoy assembling/crafting compelling proposals that helps Kittelson win work, coming up with tradeshow swag that leaves a lasting impression, and mentoring junior marketing coordinators as they grow in their careers. It’s rewarding to be part of a process that blends strategy, storytelling, and collaboration.
How do you collaborate and stay connected with teammates who are in other offices across the country?
I really value the “one-firm philosophy” at Kittelson, it allows me to stay connected and collaborate with teammates across different offices as if we were all in the same room. Working on firmwide initiatives like proposals, business cards, trade show materials, and serving on the safety committee has given me a unique opportunity to build relationships beyond the Carolinas. These experiences not only broaden my perspective but also strengthen my ability to contribute meaningfully across the organization.

What do you think are the most important skills for someone in your role?
One of the most important skills for a marketing coordinator working on proposals is the ability to manage details while keeping the big picture in mind. It takes strong organization, clear communication, and a collaborative mindset to bring together input from technical teams and turn it into a compelling, client-focused narrative. Time management and adaptability are also crucial, especially when juggling multiple deadlines. I’ve found that being proactive, resourceful, and able to guide others through the process helps ensure proposals are not only complete but truly competitive.
What about Kittelson inspires you?
Kittelson’s work on transformative projects that improve safety, accessibility, and sustainability across communities are projects that really inspire me to help people live safer, more connected lives. Being part of a team that contributes to meaningful change, whether through thoughtful design, strategic communication, or collaborative planning, gives me a strong sense of purpose. Kittelson’s core values not only shape Kittelson’s culture, but also carry an influence into my life outside of work and reminds me why I chose to work Kittelson.
