Challenge
The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) Safe Routes to School (SRTS) program is centered on helping children travel to school safely by walking and bicycling. Supporting that goal across a statewide program requires clear guidance, steady coordination, and tools that help everyone involved work from a shared understanding. It also calls for careful use of public funds and a consistent focus on reducing fatalities and serious injuries.
Solution
Our team serves as FDOT’s Statewide SRTS Coordinator. We provide ongoing support to District SRTS Coordinators and manage key program activities from start to finish. This includes hosting monthly coordination calls; responding to stakeholder inquiries; collaborating with university partners at University of Florida, University of South Florida, and University of Miami; administering the grant cycle; maintaining the Safe Routes to School website; and coordinating educational resources.
The team also developed statewide guidance, including the SRTS Coordinators Handbook and updated application guide, to improve consistency, streamline implementation, and deliver a high return on investment for FDOT and its Districts. Additional support included assistance with infrastructure grant applications and programming, statewide crash data analysis, and communication materials focused on safety messaging.
The Outcome
Helping Communities Deliver Safe Routes to School Across Florida
Collectively, the work completed under these efforts has strengthened statewide partnerships in district coordination meetings, enhanced the clarity and consistency of safety program communications, and supported FDOT’s ongoing commitment to reducing fatalities and serious injuries across Florida’s transportation network.
