Position Summary

We are looking for a talented professional to join the team in our Portland, Oregon, office. The focus of this position is designing transportation roadway and drainage engineering projects that range from road/street segment and intersection concept to final design including the development of bid-ready construction documents.

As a mid-level engineer, the Transportation Drainage Engineer will be primarily responsible for:

  • Effectively designing roadway and storm conveyance/treatment design projects for the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT), as well as local agencies and regional clients,
  • Assisting with business development activities,
  • Conducting quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) review of project deliverables,
  • Developing scope, budget, and schedule for projects, as well as providing internal project management and coordination,
  • Coordinating with public agency staff, private consultants, stakeholder outreach teams, and other disciplines for project delivery, and
  • Providing on-the-job training through coaching and mentoring to junior-level staff.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or related field.
  • 5 or more years of transportation and drainage engineering design that includes increasing responsibility in the preparation of reports, plans, specifications and special provisions, and engineering & construction estimates for multidiscipline roadway design projects.
  • Familiarity with ODOT Hydraulics Manual and Army Corps of Engineers Slopes V standards.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license in Oregon, or the ability to obtain it within six months.
  • Past experience in internal task management, with a track record of organizing and training junior-level staff on project components.
  • Software: High degree of functionality in Microstation/InRoads/OpenRoads and/or AutoCAD/Civil3D and hydraulic modeling software (i.e., HEC-HMS, HEC-RAS, or XPSWMM).
  • Track-record of coordinating effectively with public agency staff and teaming partners on multidiscipline engineering project teams for project delivery.

Preferred Additional Qualifications

  • Familiarity with the procedures and methodologies published in major national guidelines (e.g., American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials [AASHTO] and Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices [MUTCD]) and department of transportation design standards and guidelines (ODOT preferred).
  • Familiarity with Clean Water Services, City of Portland BES, and/or Water Environment Services drainage design and Low Impact Development Approaches (LIDAs) manuals.
  • Experience in project delivery through publicly delivered plans, specifications, and estimate (PS&E) processes.
  • Experience as a Field Engineer/inspector on public infrastructure projects.
  • LEED AP ND certification or Greenroads STP Level 2 certification.
  • Confidence in public speaking before audiences of laypersons, stakeholders, teaming partners, and owners.
  • Interest in working on an array of projects led by other Kittelson offices.

Base salary range for this position (place in range determined by candidate’s experience): $80,000-$120,000*
