Challenge

In the Brunswick Forest community, the intersection at Brunswick Forest Parkway and Low Country Boulevard was creating challenges for people driving, walking, and biking. Wide stretches of pavement encouraged high speeds, and an unsignalized crosswalk that linked the neighborhood trail system to the community clubhouse was difficult to navigate safely. Residents and the Town of Leland hoped to replace the intersection with a multilane roundabout that would maintain four lanes on Brunswick Forest Parkway, but the available space made that design option unworkable.

Solution

To meet the needs of both traffic operations and multimodal safety, Kittelson designed a single-lane roundabout that fit within the existing curb lines and preserved the crosswalk locations. The project used low-cost construction materials, including acrylic curb and flex posts, new pavement markings, signage, and a reconstructed central island. The design process was completed on an accelerated timeline, with construction plans and bid documents delivered in just five months.

The Outcome

Speedy Delivery, Slower Speeds on Brunswick Forest Parkway

The roundabout opened in October 2021. Since then, traffic speeds at the intersection have slowed without adding delay, and people walking and biking have a more comfortable and predictable crossing experience. For Town leadership and the community at large, the project provided a timely and affordable solution that balanced operational needs with the safety and comfort of everyone using the intersection.
