Challenge
Following the retirement of the Florida Department of Transportation’s Safe Routes to School (SRTS) coordinator, the program faced the challenge of preserving institutional knowledge that had largely been held by one person. At the same time, program staff needed an easier way to understand how SRTS funding had been allocated over time.
Answering questions about projects often required searching through large amounts of program data. It was difficult to see where funding had been assigned, how projects were distributed across districts and years, and how the overall program was progressing. A clearer, more visual way to organize this information was needed to support program management and leadership discussions.
Solution
Kittelson developed an internal dashboard that brings SRTS project and funding information into a single resource.
The dashboard allows users to filter information by year and district, navigate detailed project information across multiple pages, and view program data through easy-to-understand graphics. Rather than searching through large datasets, staff can quickly find the information they need while also viewing the program at a broader level.
Because SRTS projects change as they advance from design to construction, the dashboard is designed as a living resource. Each year the latest projects are added, and new features are incorporated as questions arise, which allows the tool to evolve alongside the program.
The Outcome

The tool supports a clearer and complete program-level perspective and helps staff answer questions about projects, funding, and program history. It also provides leadership with a clearer picture of how funding has been invested across the program, which improves transparency and makes it easier to communicate program progress.
Future phases are expected to expand the dashboard by incorporating before-and-after analysis and additional performance metrics to better understand how the program is benefiting communities across the state.
