Challenge
The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) Safety Office wanted to address safety concerns and barriers that prevent students from walking or biking to school, including inadequate infrastructure, high traffic volumes, and a lack of community awareness around pedestrian and bicyclist safety.
Solution
Our team supported FDOT with the creation of safer school zones. We worked closely with district coordinators, municipalities, jurisdictions, and schools to identify priority areas and advance infrastructure improvements, such as sidewalks, crosswalks, and signage. We also worked to promote educational initiatives that encourage safe walking and biking habits among students and the broader community.
The Outcome
Improving Safe Routes to School for Florida Students
Florida was the first state to have a statewide program for Safe Routes to School. These improvements are intended to create safer, more accessible routes for students walking, biking, and rolling to school. This leads to increased physical activity, reduced traffic congestion, and greater peace of mind for families and school communities.
