Challenge

The City of Lynn needed support in planning a school campus that would replace the existing Pickering Middle School in Lynn, Massachusetts. The district sought a school with a larger student capacity, but it does not provide student transportation by bus. Evaluating safe and efficient transportation options for students and staff was therefore a key consideration in determining both the site and the overall layout of the campus.

Solution

Kittelson worked with Raymond Design Associates, Inc. (RDA) to evaluate six potential sites and associated redistricting plans, assessing traffic impacts related to school activities. Once the preferred site was selected, the team conducted a traffic impact analysis and site review to promote safe multimodal access and circulation within the campus. The review focused on minimizing impacts to surrounding residential streets and the busy Wyoma Square while also supporting safe routes to school for pedestrians and bicyclists. Kittelson’s efforts emphasized access management and site design strategies that balanced transportation efficiency with the safety and convenience of students, staff, and the broader community.

The Outcome

Planning a Safe, Accessible Middle School Campus in Lynn, MA

By integrating transportation safety expertise into the school design process, Kittelson helped guide the team toward site features that support safe access for students arriving by foot, bike, car, or public transit. These recommendations contributed to a campus design that considers both operational efficiency and the safety and mobility of all users.
