Challenge

Clackamas County, Washington County, and the City of Wilsonville, in Oregon, were looking to improve safety and reduce congestion by incorporating a roundabout at the intersection of SW Stafford Road, SW Elligsen Road, and SW 65th Avenue. The design improvements had to take into consideration the surrounding landscape, which includes a creek, wetlands, and steep topography. They were also looking to alleviate the concerns of the property owners and residents through a visualization that clearly showed the proposed solution.

Solution

Our team worked with the City and the Counties on a preliminary design for a dual roundabout concept that addressed site constraints and minimized impacts to the creek, wetlands, and right-of-way. The preliminary design will inform final design decisions, which will incorporate roadway, structural, and stormwater facilities.

Our 3D visualization team turned the 2D CAD into a 3D model with animation that illustrated the flow of traffic for the new intersection. It also highlighted the safety features the roundabout would provide. This visualization was shown to community members at a public involvement meeting.

The Outcome

Using 3D Modeling to Build Understanding for a New Roundabout in Wilsonville, OR

The 3D model gave community members a clear picture of how the roundabout would work at the intersection, which helped address concerns from nearby property owners. Now, the project is planned for construction in 2028.
