Challenge
The City of Raleigh wanted to introduce a 30-station, 290-bike network for residents and visitors in the area. With no prior experience implementing a station-based bikeshare system the City sought national expertise to support the thoughtful placement and design of stations that would best serve Raleigh’s residents and visitors. At the same time, they were navigating the introduction of privately operated, station-less bikeshare options emerging in the area.
Solution
Kittelson led the planning, design, and implementation of Raleigh’s Phase 1 bikeshare system. Our team began conducting field visits and evaluating over 30 potential station locations based on multiple factors, including access to power, connectivity costs, visibility for sponsors, and user convenience. We then designed the station placement for each location and created a comprehensive design bid package outlining the conduit and concrete work needed to prepare each site. During the implementation phase, we led the construction permit applications for all 30 locations and acted as the primary point of contact for the City to maintain daily communications with contractors.
The Outcome
Bringing Bikeshare to Life in Raleigh
As a result of this effort, Raleigh successfully launched its Cardinal Bikeshare system with 30 stations in May 2019. The new system introduced a convenient, sustainable transportation option for residents and visitors which enhanced mobility throughout the city.
