Challenge
In Florida, information about multimodal freight performance was not readily available or broadly shared among transportation practitioners and other interested parties. Unless individuals worked directly within a Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) modal office, they lacked information about the quantity and movement of goods traveling throughout the state and through Florida’s ports.
This limited access to freight information created challenges for agencies and organizations seeking a clearer understanding of freight mobility, reliability, and infrastructure utilization across Florida’s transportation system.
Solution
Our team gathered granular freight data for highways and all commercial seaports and airports across the state. We compiled the information into reporting metrics at the port, facility, and statewide levels.
The data was then made accessible through an online visualization platform—the FDOT Source Book—to provide users with an interactive way to explore freight performance information across Florida.
The Outcome
Making Freight Performance Data Easier to Access in Florida
The online visualization platform gave transportation practitioners and interested parties an opportunity to better understand the scale of freight mobility, reliability, and infrastructure utilization throughout the state. The information is now used by metropolitan planning organizations across Florida to support freight planning efforts, and FDOT uses the data to inform statewide planning activities.
