Challenge

Following a trend of increased collisions resulting in serious harm—particularly to people walking, biking, or using mobility devices—the City of San Mateo sought a plan to improve safety for all users along their roadways.

Solution

Our team supported the City of San Mateo in developing a framework to better understand and address traffic safety challenges across the community. This effort includes engaging key stakeholders and community members, conducting collision and roadway analysis, identifying emphasis areas and countermeasures, and creating a prioritization methodology for traffic safety projects.

After conducting comprehensive network screening, our team identified 21 priority intersections and seven priority roadway segments. To help track the success of the local road safety plan (LRSP), performance measures were developed that aligned with the goals of the LRSP.

The Outcome

San Mateo’s People-First Approach to Traffic Safety

The City is now equipped with clear priorities and actionable strategies to strengthen roadway safety. The identification of high-priority locations and the adoption of performance measures allow the City to direct resources where they can have the greatest impact. While implementation is ongoing, this foundational work has created a path toward reducing fatalities and serious crashes and supporting safer, more accessible streets for everyone who walks, bikes, drives, or rolls in San Mateo.
