Challenge

The City of Rockville was looking to improve safety and multimodality for Beall Avenue from North Washington Street to Hungerford Drive. This avenue faced challenges with high vehicular speeds, and the City wanted to create a more comfortable environment for all users.

Solution

Our team identified corridor and intersection safety strategies and outlined implementation requirements, expected multimodal safety improvements, and anticipated travel pattern impacts at each intersection along the corridor. The project deliverable included three alternative corridor and intersection concept designs for short, medium, and long-term implementations. The designs focused on reducing vehicular speeds, enhancing bicycle and pedestrian facilities, and encouraging traffic calming to create a safer environment.

The Outcome

Transforming a Speedy Street Into a Comfortable Street

This project will inform subsequent decisions regarding which safety strategies should proceed to the design phase. Additionally, the concepts for Beall Avenue complement future Flash BRT plans along Hungerford Drive to create a better transportation network. With these changes, Kittelson helped the City identify short-, mid-, and long-term solutions to redesign Beall Avenue into a Complete Street that better serves all modes and users.
