Challenge
The City of Boise and the Capital City Development Corporation (CCDC) were looking to remake a street in disrepair into a street that was safer, more convenient for all users, and offered more access to restaurants, entertainment, and open spaces. The City chose 11th Street for this project because it provides the most complete connection from River Street to Camel’s Back Park.
Solution
Kittelson worked in coordination with an Interagency Advisory Team (IAT) to develop a concept design for a raised bike lane along 11th Street in downtown Boise. Our team used the collected data, feedback from an online public survey, and information gathered from meetings with surrounding businesses, property owner representatives, and IAT to create and evaluate multiple alternatives for a low-stress bikeway that would be comfortable for a wide range of people.
The concept design considers planned streetscape improvements and includes protected intersection elements at the Front Street and Myrtle Street intersections, which are both five-lane, one-way roadways connecting to I-184.
After the concept design, our team was then selected to lead the development of the final PS&E package for construction of the bikeway. This included full-depth pavement rehabilitation, underground canal structure, utilities, sidewalks, street trees, pedestrian amenities, and converting on-street bike lanes to raised bike lanes behind on-street parking.
The Outcome
Raising the Bar with a Raised Bike Lane in Boise
The bikeway concept design improves safety and comfort on 11th Street in Downtown Boise from State Street to River Street. The bikeway creates a premier “ridge-to-river” bicycle connection between the Foothills, the Greenbelt, and Downtown Boise businesses. This project was awarded the 2024 Top Project Award, presented by Idaho Business Review.
