Challenge

Trucks carrying commodities to, from, and within Florida rely on truck parking facilities so drivers can take mandatory breaks and rest periods. These breaks play an important role in supporting both driver wellbeing and public safety.

Across Florida’s Interstate system and other corridors, existing truck parking spaces are not keeping pace with demand. As freight activity continues, the shortage of available parking creates challenges for drivers searching for safe and reliable places to stop.

Solution

Our team is working with the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) to expand truck parking opportunities at existing publicly available parking facilities to help address current and future demand.

As part of this effort, FDOT and Kittelson also evaluated opportunities to expand truck parking at private facilities that currently serve as truck stops. This work helped identify locations where additional parking could support freight movement while increasing the number of rest opportunities for drivers traveling throughout Central Florida.

The Outcome

Supporting Safe Freight Stops Across Florida

Through this effort, FDOT now has direction on potential truck parking sites to advance for future implementation. This includes identifying locations where right-of-way purchases may be needed, along with sites that can move forward into facility design for future construction.
